before they receive the financial aid package? What if you narrow your decision down to one school, then receive a horrible financial aid package from this school? What to do then?

For some people, either money isn't an issue because they've saved up or have relatives who are going to pay for it OR they know that because of their own or their parents' financial status they won't get significant financial aid from any school. Unless you've applied to a cheap state school, almost any med school's gonna run you around 35-50K a year, so at that point you might just pick the one you like most, figuring you'll go into debt anywhere.

The financial aid package shouldn't make any difference. You can look up the prices of the school online.

Maximum federal loans are available to you:

$38,500 a year in Stafford.

possibility for $6,000 a year in Perkins (if you have a $0 efc.)

Because big scholarships are not going to happen at medical school on a very regular basis. For the most part, you can expect up to $5000 per year, which probably won't sway you too much. This isn't like undergrad where people are fighting for you, as there are enough qualified people willing to take a spot and pay full price. Yes I know, people do get full-rides, but these are given to a very few select people and by only a few select schools (Pitt, WashU, Yale come to mind), often before the financial aid packages are given out.

As for loans, they are all going to be the same regardless of tuition. Tuition + $15-20K for living expenses (with variance due to cost of living in that city).
