the med-derm spot is at a program in the northeast, and it's an academic track program and going to be unfilled, as the program is only taking people that it actually wanted (i.e. it'd rather go unfilled if it doesn't find anyone it likes) -- i'm not sure if it's kosher yet to say where; there were 2 spots filled in the SOAP for advanced positions; the other unfilled spots were not offered/filled via SOAP
So then after starting out with
1 PGY-1 med-derm spot unfilled, and
11 PGY-2 derm spots unfilled at the very beginning, post-SOAP --> we're left with
1 PGY-1 med-derm spot unfilled, and
9 PGY-2 derm spots unfilled.
I think the Derm PDs didn't want to be locked in by SOAP to fill their spots quickly within the week, and would want to interview you instead (unlike say prelim medicine spots). SOAP I think was more so that PDs aren't getting reams of emails, faxes, mailed applications, etc. from all applicants, and applicants don't have to go through the entire process of emailing, faxing, and mailing their applications. It just streamlines the acceptance process. It is "recommended" that programs fill their spots through SOAP, but they definitely do not have to, as since it is an unmatched spot, the rules of the match don't apply.
So the Derm positions will be filled in a few months, before your ERAS application is trashed, just not now, this week.
