THE HIGH NUMBER OF MEDICAL SCHOOLS IN THE U.S!

It is amazing! there are so many! there are only 50 dental schools in the U.S. Does anyone know the exact number for med schools - including the one's in the islands? for dentsitry - it is counterproductive to go to dent school outside U.S, because after 4 years, you have to do a two year program at a U.S. dental school, and those spots are very very very very compeitive (everyone outside wants to practice in the bueatiful country of America - i won't get into that though).

GET THIS FELLA's - only 4,200 students (+/- 100) have been accepted to U.S. dental schools since 1981. That Stat is SCARY! :scared:

You all have a lot of med schools to apply to! Just wanted to know how that make you feel - GOOD, i'm sure - right?

If only 4200 students have been accepted into dental school since 1981, that makes about 175 students per year that are accepted, which is just over 3 students per school if there are 50 in the US. I looks like your numbers are wrong, but then again I know nothing about dental school.

It would make me feel good if it weren't the case that it's so damn hard to gain admittance to a good medical school!

This is prolly cuz we dont need that many dentists.

Think again - one person in the hospital could easily need multiple physicians and surgeons. You could get in a severe car accident and need an orthopedic surgeon, a neurosurgeon, a plastic surgeon, and a smattering of specialists for different organ systems. How many dentists do you need? There are more doctors, so there's a lot more people applying for the increased availability.

Btw, there's something like 125 allopathic med schools in the US - with 35,000 people applying for those 16,000 spots, but the 35K applicants are rather self-selecting too.

Dentists serve their purpose. Who else is going to fix all those caries you'll get from drinking gallons of Mountain Dew in a vain attempt to stay awake during your residency?

Or what about the ground teeth from too much bruxation? Think about all those long, irritating shifts. And who hasn't had a case of halitosis?

My dentist is my dentist and oral surgeon. Somebody please explain to me how that works?

lol  - sorry, i couldn't help it!

dentist are also known as oral surgeons! think about it!

are you pre-med? don't ask why i'm asking, i think it's obvious

actually - i think it was an honest mistake on your part, sometimes, i forget to spell the most simple words, like 'why'. I remember once I was so confused on how to spell it, that it actually took a while, and i had to ask someone in the end. After, i felt like such a fool! I think my brain cell that carried the memory of how to spell the word must have malfunctioned or something!

DDS - doctor of dental surgery (that might help)

3-0: are you sure about that? If dentist truly equals oral surgeon then what about dentists who have a DMD instead of DDS?

the dmd and dds degrees are the same thing, just like DO and MD.

oral surgeon = dentist, not the other way around.

You come off as a bit of a douche. And being a dentist does not make you an oral surgeon, either.

You pre-meds have no clue about dentistry, let me break it down:

DMD = DDS and DDS = DMD

basically, all dental degrees were DDS, doctor of dental surgery

but then, some wise guy at some dental school (i wont say which) decided to get their degree changed to DMD - to stand out with the MD's - go figure!

a lot of other schools followed this trend, and some decided to stick with DDS - and now we arrive at today - some schools give out dmd's and others, dds - it's the same thing!

Dentists are oral surgeons you wise guys! What else did you think they were? Proctologists? Give me a break. You are probably thinking of the speciality of dentistry - am i right?

final thought - dentisty is a specialized field of medicine - dealing with the oral cavity and the surrounding tissues, gums, and nerves...blah, blah, blah

did you know dentists are skilled in the subject area of nutrition too? and their fields also include the entire neck region? i bet you didn't! come on premeds, do some research!

We're premeds/meds, not predents.

May I ask what you hoped to accomplish by posting this thread in the pre-allo forum?

Here is a quote from American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (www.aaoms.org):

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons are the surgical specialists of the dental profession

"After dental school, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons complete four or more years of hospital-based surgical residency training that includes rotations in the general surgical service working along side other physician surgeons.

At the conclusion of this demanding program, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons are well prepared to perform the full scope of the specialty, which encompasses the diagnosis, surgical and related management of diseases, injuries and defects of both the functional and aesthetic aspects of the oral and maxillofacial regions. This includes preventive, reconstructive or emergency care for the teeth, mouth, jaws and facial structures. "

So no, dentists are not oral surgeons. Stop being a douche and leave us alone.

Dental school is easier to get into than Medical school. This is a good thing. I have no idea what point you are trying to make. Why don't you just talk about how the average dentist makes more money than the average physician? Any particular reason you feel like trolling pre-allo today?

OK, from my Stedman's Medical Dictionary (a MEDICAL book, so you have to believe it :)):

Oral and maxillofacial surgery: the dental specialty that includes the surgical correction of injuries and malformations of the midface, jaws, and dentition.

Oral surgeon: a general practitioner of dentistry (SYN= dental surgeon)

Dentist: a legally qualified practitioner of dentistry

HAHAHA!!!!! I am afraid that you are out number here buddy, return to your pre-Dent forum. If you think that being a pre-dent is too hard, then try something easier right, like PRE-MED. Then after you go through the MCAT and adcom, then we will talk.
