imp of step 3 for img

I am an IMG..I am done with step 1[ 233] and step 2 ck[ 210, was terribly hard] ..taking step 2 cs in july. i want to apply for residency this year. i want to take step 3 during or after residency. I understand that if I do get a residency, it will be a J1 visa. what exactly is the difference between J-1 and H1B? why do people prefer H1B? does it have an impact on getting a job after residency?

based on your comments, if I do decide to take it, when should I take the exam by latest? Is it no later than Jan 2015?
