Because anyone you've ever met was born or has been living in a country where the official language is English for 150 years prior to them being a person.
Kind of seems socially responsible to learn the language of the country you live in. Even if you plan to start a revolution later in your life for the atrocities committed 500 years ago.

Actually America has no official language.

At parkland in dallas where a lot of patients didn't speak English, it was still never an issue. Interpreters everywhere in the ER and a fair number of bilingual staff, or usually the older Hispanics who didn't speak English, almost always came in with someone younger who spoke the language. On the floors, they had the Alvin interpretation phone in every in patient room. We all knew the 5 digit number we had to call and within 30 seconds we would have an interpreter on the other end.

When i interviewed at Texas tech el paso for residency, they made their incoming residents take a medical Spanish course during orientation so that they could get by without an interpreter. At least that was the general expectation that you could swing a ln h&p by yourself

We have translator iPads where you select the language and can speak to an interpreter via FaceTime. Way better than the phone as you’re hands free
