Recently reviewed the new ERAS 2020 Participating Specialties & Programs list. It seems like a record amount of programs aren't participating this year.

Nearly 20% for surgery programs, 17% for internal and 15% for anesthesiology.

Any guesses as to why.

Several reasons:

1. Programs may not have signed in yet and committed to the match. Several big names are on the IM list -- Northwestern, Hopkins, etc. They will clearly be in the match. Every year we need to log in and commit to the match. Although the email to do so came weeks ago, programs may have not done so. They can always do so anytime in the season. New DO programs to the NRMP match may not know the process.

2. There has been marked application inflation over the years. Lots of reasons why, the "all in" is part of the problem. Some programs interview a bunch of people, and then have lots of unfilled spots. If that happens enough years, you ultimately might decide to pull out of the match and just interview and fill spots.
