Is 28 too old to be considered in one of these surgical fields?

I know a few friends that're applying into these surgical fields of the forum, and most are around the age of 24 and 25. I'll be starting rotations in September, which will make me 28 by then. Will apply for 2015 match being 29, and won't start residency till I'm 29.

Bday is end of the month.

Seriously? Is this for real? Why do people think that if you're older than twelve that you're far too old to go into surgery?

Here's a serious answer: no.

Was thinking from the pov of a PD. Nobody wants a dinosaur to apply to their program, especially knowing that as a surgeon you have a set number of years to keep your skills till they start diminishing.

28 is a dinosaur? Hmm. Bad news for me.

The "standard" route would put you at age 26: graduate high school at 18, college 22, med school 26.

You're talking about 3 years difference. Talk about over thinking things.

You're kidding, right?

The average med school matriculant is 25-26. Do the math.

I started my residency this year and I am 30. Don't let your age (especially when it isn't old) dictate what you will do for the next 30 years of your life.

Two GS chiefs from past years were 38-39 when they graduated from our five year program. I was the baby of the program, turning 30 the month before my graduation from Gen surg this past May.

Depends on if you look older than stated age...

I wouldn't hire ya. I'd be worried about you breaking a hip or forgetting where you put a raytec. What about when your son retires, and you can't live with him anymore? Will be be able to make it in for rounds from the nursing home?
