Absence of fetal tissue in the uterus with hcg levels above 1,500 (minimum lvl associated with ability to visualize embryo via transvaginal ultrasound) is treated as ectopic.
The ultrasound is one part of the evaluation. Can you diagnose a heart attack without an EKG? Probably, but the EKG is still an integral part of the assessment.
