I am working on the Kaplan Organic Chemistry book for the MCAT. For the chapter one practice quiz, why is the answer not A? The answer is 2,2,5-trimethyl-3-ethylhexane. Why can't it be 3-isopropyl-5-methylhexane? How are the priorities placed better in the first answer? Thanks!

I also don't have the book in front of me (so can't say for sure), but just from what you posted, I'm guessing it's a nomenclature kind of question. The thing is that 2,2,5-trimethyl-3-ethylhexane is a totally different molecule than 3-isopropyl-5-methylhexane. The former has 11 carbons, while the latter has 10. I think you might have gotten tert-butyl confused with isopropyl (which is easy to do).

Good luck with your studying!
