I'll keep using MDV for multiple pts. Thanks.

"cognitive behavioral therapy, guided imagery, virtual reality"

Are they seriously saying this?
Then are telling us to buy vr headsets or paint a picture of a beach to numb a patient?

Topical anesthetics, infiltration with diphenhydramine, and nonpharmacologic therapies (i.e., cognitive behavioral therapy, guided imagery, virtual reality, mechanodesensitization) may be used as alternatives to skin infiltration of local anesthetic for reducing procedural pain.

squeezy balls, telling people to be mindful, go to their happy place for just a second, 2 slow deep breaths while the injection starts, hand holding, etc.

My old attending in the fellowship was always a minimalist when it came to local anesthetics. He'd tell the pts "You'll be OK, everything is OK" over and over again for the duration of the entire procedure as he was sticking needles into their backs while patients were basically coming off the table from discomfort. We called it "ok anesthesia" behind his back, LOL.
