Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me out here...I am a US citizen, went to Ross med school, am doing my clinicals in the US and will graduate in 2008. I plan to go into Internal Medicine. The thing is that my boyfriend is from the UK and he may have to return there for work. I know that if I were to do my residency here in the states, the IM boards are accepted in the UK and I could then be an Attending there. My question is, is there any way I could do my "residency" (I know it has another name in the UK) in, say, England, and then be able to move back to the states in the future and not have to start over at the beginning of residency???? Thank you to all in advance!! - Catey :luck:

The short answer is NO.

Unfortunately, US training and UK training are not interchangable. A US trained specialist can't practise in the UK, without having to go thorugh the UK training system, and in turn a UK trained specailist can't practise in the US unless they go through the complete residency.

Except for family practice. Some US states do not require their general practitioner (UK term for a family doctor) to be board registered, they accept the UK qualification.
