Before I start next July I'm letting myself binge on free reading. I've read some classics (House of God) and I'm currently reading Sandeep Jahuar's nonfiction novel about his Intern year.

I've previously read all of Mary Roach's novels and loved them.

So- new recommendations? They can be outside the direct realm of medicine, I just like anything engaging and eye opening!

Far From the Tree by Andrew Solomon is incredible. While not strictly science/medicine, it's both science-y and medicine-y and will give you such a good, helpful perspective when working with patients.

Everyone is going to tell you there are a lot of threads like this and to search. That's true, and worth doing because a lot of those threads have excellent suggestions. I don't think there can ever be too many threads about books, though.

Verghese - Cutting for Stone - Historical fiction, drama, immigration and medicine in America as a FMG.
Crichton - EVERYTHING. Andromeda Strain maybe?
Preston - Hot Zone (given the recent Ebola, duh).

Some nonfiction books that I found to be good reads:
Atul Gawande- Complications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science
Siddhartha Mukherjee- The Emperor of All Maladies
Tracy Kidder- Strength in What Remains
