Hello
I’m a dental student on the Army HPSP. I’m in a serious relationship with someone who is also in dental school, with plans to get married. However, she’s not in the military. She wants to come with me wherever I’m stationed, if possible. I had a few questions:
Has anyone here been in a situation like this? Did your spouse go with you where you were stationed, and if so, did they practice in the area? Is it possible for her to get a contracting job through the military if I get stationed somewhere overseas like Japan or Germany, and if that’s an option, does she have decent chances of getting a contracting job considering her spouse would be a military dentist? Really any sort of insight or guidance would be appreciated on this matter. Thank you in advance!

I’d say she should join the military…that gives you the best chances

I saw this at one of my duty stations. The spouse signed on as a contracted dentist at the naval dental clinic. Contracting a dentist is actually cheaper than active duty, so I think it’s pretty doable, just depends on the needs of the clinic. But I would start looking wherever you are getting stationed. You also would be best off going somewhere and staying for as long as possible.

I heard of a couple that were trying to do this and the pay was atrocious…may as well look for a corporate chain at that point and sign short contracts

I had this exact issue. Served while wife worked close to our home, but area was large enough to move from commands without uprooting everyone.
I agree with @ESPN907, cooperate is everywhere, will give you money to pay for loans, mortgage, and usually guaranteed salary. Good luck finding a job for your wife overseas. Not saying that it isn't possible, but I imagine most spots (if any) are filled by those that knew the job was coming available and knew someone prior.... and I would rather have one outside of government if possible, maximize the benefits of military, but not be completely tied down.

One of our specialists (female) is married to a Coast Guard dentist. She complains how she needs to change license every-time he has to change posts. It seems doable, if she wants to move around the country and not really put down roots anywhere. Make sure she knows what she is signing up for. Also, she might one day get tired? Who knows, like any marriage, its a gamble.
