So...I was very lucky enough to be accepted to a couple schools on Dec.1st. I already declined Louisville, ASDOH and VCU, but still deciding between three dental schools (Tufts, USC and Maryland) now.... As I was doing some research on these schools, I found this interesting dental school ranking list. Feel free to check it out.

d-schools are not ranked so this list is no different than an alphabetical list of d-schools.

Nothing like a good old dental school ranking list from a blog. I'll admit that I'm biased, as I'd obviously disagree with the Tufts ranking, but I think there are large flaws with this list. USC at 13 would be, in my opinion, one of the many large flaws. People are allowed to have their opinions, though (even bloggers). Good luck with this list.

This blog post is from 2009 and the author said he/she used information from 2008. I know it's only been 3 years however stats such as "avg GPA, DAT scores, and tuition" have changed since then.
Rankings are kind of pointless. I learned this after graduating from an "elite" school.

Haha yea. I already know you are not a big fan of USC, but I really liked it. I thought PBL was very fun. (I could be biased because I am military and we do things like PBL all the times, so I am used to its format.) Plus, they said they will do it only twice nowdays.

On the other hand,Tufts is really appealing and I already have my close friends going there.
I have three more weeks to decide, so we will see...

The list is clearly from a blog lol it's just interesting how the blogger made ties. Obviously it is not accurate lol Don't be offended because you are going to be attending VCU. I know VCU dental is great and many of my friends are attending VCU now. Have fun with DR. Healey

Because 99.9% of patients dont know or care where their dentist went to school. They only care about a few things such as: is my dentist nice to me, does he take good care of me, does he deliver on his promises, and does he care about me as a person and tries his/her best to make sure I get the best level of care?

When anyone refers you to a doctor/dentist/optometrist what do you tend to ask first? "Is he/she good? Can I trust them?" I've never asked or heard anyone ask the question "What school did he go to?"

But you also made the assumption that he wasnt at the bottom of his class... oh wait you didnt think about that one? Again there's no correlation between going to Harvard and being the best oral surgeon within a 15 mile radius of your house. A reputation of a good doctor/dentist/surgeon is built on what he/she does in practice. That reputation often comes from experiences that other patients have with him/her, not from the "elite status" of his alma matter.

But hey maybe I just think differently.

These ranking must have made a few people skip a heart beat. This list must have been made by a fool. The person states they used very "objective" and "comprehensive" data, yet they include things like reputation and technology into the ranking, I wonder where they got that data from, SDN? lol. Also it is pretty much impossible to know the national board scores for each school, since that data is not released publicly, they would have had to attend pretty much every schools interview to determine that. A complete fool.

@wired: No prob. In all seriousness, probably the major benefit of coming to harvard is that it's just a pleasant, low stress place to go to dental school.. We really don't expect that the name of a school is going to 'carry us' through our career. No dental student needs the name of the school he/she attended to determine their future success.

He in fact did, but as someone who wasn't familiar with how the whole Dental School deal works I assumed he only went to Harvard for all of dental school.

When it comes time to sell yourself to the public, along with your clinical skills among many other things, a recognizable school will be valuable in certain areas; regardless of your actual skills.

This consideration is why I would possibly go to NYU over ASDOH or MWU-IL...the public perception is that NYU is a terrific school and most haven't heard of the other 2.
