Why bother taking them?

I've seen people with decades of neuroICU and neuroanesthesia experience, and neuroCCM certification, being screwed over when the neurosurgeons decided that they only wanted neurologists and neurosurgeons in their neuroICU.

NeuroCCM should not have a separate board certification for board-certified generalist intensivists, just for those coming through the neuroCCM fellowship pathway. Every neuro patient deserves a good neurologist/neurosurgeon and a good intensivist, meaning two specialists. Same in the cardiac units, where I've seen some royal F ups when cardiologists/cardiac surgeons play critical care.

I took them this year because I was eligible and thought that it would help my CV. It actually only serves to be a very expensive ego boost given the $3000 for the test and cost for prepping. I am now reconsidering having done it especially given all the things I had going on while I was prepping and the annoyance of having to wait 10-12 weeks for a result that they could provide much sooner than that in this day and age.

With respect to the OP asking about study materials I would recommend the following since some of the other materials out there are kind of outdated and the UNCS test doesn’t seem like it’s on the same level from the word of mouth. This is with the caveat that I haven’t received confirmation of passing yet so my materials may not have been good.

Chest SEEK questions for critical care especially Neuro section

Neurocritical care Socity question bank

SCCM Neurocritical care video board review

I do wonder if I will take a future cardiac critical care test since I do a lot of that and where the madness/money grab will end.

Thanks for the feedback inspirationmd! what about a good textbook for a solid foundation?

I used Mayo Clinic review book of critical care and neurocritical care as a reference for some esoteric stuff. Also the textbook for Neurocritical care that Neurocritical care society sells came with the package I bought. Solid review but very dense and harder to read in my opinion. Both were references for things I needed clarification on more so than a primary study tool. Good questions in the Mayo book too.
