Hi Everyone

MS2 here highly considering neurology. For the 3 year PGY2 programs, I'm guessing you either apply to a PGY 1 prelim program in the same institution as the PGY2 or somewhere else with a prelmin program. Does the PGY2 main program know which PGY1 intern program you're applying, and conversely does the prelim program know which PGY2 main program you're going to go after intern year? Still really new to the process, thanks for the clarification!

Depends on the program.

- Some advanced programs (PGY2-4) will send word to the medicine department that they're ranking the following people highly, and through an arrangement, medicine will rank you highly as well. It's not a categorical position, so you COULD do prelim elsewhere, but the PGY1 spot (if you match for PGY2) is yours to turn down.
- Some places will at least get you a guaranteed interview (but nothing else beyond that) for the prelim position if you are granted an advanced position interview.
- Others have you fend for yourself.

I am not aware of a lot of inter-institution sharing of who is applying here and there.

In general, most folks don't take it personally if you do prelim elsewhere. There are too many non-medicine factors that play in to that decision.
