I've searched through this forum and can't really find any concrete description of NM private practice lifestyle/earnings? Can you help me out?

I can't give you exact salaries, but as neuromuscular relies heavily on diagnostic procedures (EMG/NCS), you will get paid pretty well depending on how many procedures you do. Additionally, the lifestyle is quite attractive as well, especially if you are going into private practice. You can essentially set your own hours and schedule, and if you want a purely outpatient practice, then you don't need to take call.

In reality, though, I believe it is very difficult to eschew general neurology completely and see neuromuscular diseases exclusively when you're in private practice. If you're in a large single-specialty group where every physician has their own niche, and they're willing to let you do all the EMGs, you might be able to market yourself as such, but I don't think that would get you out of participating in the group's call schedule. If you're in a solo practice or a multi-specialty group, it would be next to impossible. In academic centers, though, it's much easier to be a "neuromuscular specialist" ... with the concomitant lower salaries, of course.

Is it suffice to say that there is a market saturation for EMG physicians currently? Are EMG physicians confined to work in large cities?
