Ummmm....the dean? Like the guy in charge of 100 new podiatrist a year? Great news....I ran into the dean of TUSPM at the ACFAS national. He painted a pretty bleak picture of the profession’s future, applicant pool, applicant quality, etc. The last thing this profession needs is another school. *****ic to even consider the idea.
By the way, what ever happened with the DPM, MD from Chicago who was opening a school to obtain a dual degree?

What will this be like for those of us who are in the class of 2024?

Maybe it'll help with more mainstream adoption of our profession
Is there a way to stop this school going forward?
I can't get why they think there needs to be another school. If they let it proceed, they should cut seats at other schools with large class sizes that fill their seats with people below 3.0 and below 490 MCAT
The only way to stop this school from opening is to stop Dr. Harkless who is on a power trip.
It does nothing for our profession. It does nothing for the advancement of our profession. It does nothing but continue to pump out more unqualified doctors into an already saturated field.
No. This is a one man mission. Maybe write a letter to PMnews and see if it gets postedDo you think emailing or signing a petition would do any help?
The ortho association in Texas is very strong. Maybe they can do something about it.No. This is a one man mission. Maybe write a letter to PMnews and see if it gets posted

It is supply and demand.this is such a podiatry thing to get up in arms about. No different than the older pods trying to restrict privileges to younger ones, or offering dog**** associate salaries.
there's plenty of feet out there.

I interviewed at Western right before Dr. Harkless left. I was the only one on the interview so I talked to him for a good 3 hours one on one. The whole conversion all he talked about was money. The only way to stop this school from opening is to stop Dr. Harkless who is on a power trip.

we need a 1 year residency option for people who don’t want to do surgery. Going 4 years of undergrad + 4 years of pod school + 3 years residency just to make less than $100k with $300k debt.
Yea this seems like a win win for everyone involved except for the actual people practicing the profession. It’s a quick money grab on one side and a way to serve (free labor) an underserved area that is difficult to recruit to on the other side.we need a 1 year residency option for people who don’t want to do surgery. Going 4 years of undergrad + 4 years of pod school + 3 years residency just to make less than $100k with $300k debt. At least let me start paying down debt earlier.
Miserable.
also to the topic at hand. another school? What a joke. Every major city is already saturated.

[/QUOTE(whispers) don't live in a major city
All my friends killing it are in cities less than 250k. And not coastal cities
I work with Crna’s making 200k plus a year. Why in the world are podiatric surgeons paid so low? Those nursing home jobs pay well. $125k plus for full time.

Excuse my ignorance since I’m just a pre med. Have MD/DO surgical specialities faced a reimbursement decline as well??Crappy surgical reimbursements. Medicare paid more for 28296 in 2000 than it does in 2020. When inflation is added, it comes to a more than 50% decline in the amount.

They work 40 hours. Most are on four 10x hour shifts and others work five 8 x hour shifts. You can also work two 24 hour shifts if you want. The cool thing is they get paid to take call and there is always OT available to them which can significantly increase their pay. Seems like an amazing gig I wish I did it.The nursing home jobs you are only working at most 4 hours a day 5 days a week. How many hours are those CRNAs putting in?
one of the things that sucks about podiatry (and many other medical specialties) is that there is not a linear increase in work/pay. As a CRNA, ED, anesthesia and some others its as simple as picking up extra shifts. Like hey, I need a couple extra grand this month so i can buy something fancy for my spouse, I will work a few more shifts. They work 40 hours. More division is going to create more confusion amongst the general population about what we do. Even worse is the guys who refer to themselves as "Foot and Ankle Surgeons"
I also don't know anyone making that little amount of money.

I feel youThis is worse than the ACFAS "free- labor" fellowships. Harkless and his schools... I seriously hate this profession.

Reading all of these posts is pretty depressing. I was excited to start podiatry school in July, but I am not sure if I am making the right decision.
