Consider the oxidation of OCS by bromine to sulfate ion and carbonate ion in strong basic solution. What is the ratio of hydroxide ion to product bromide ion?
1) 2:1
2) 1:1
3) 3:2
4) 8:1
How would you do this?
This is what I had in mind:
OCS - oxidized.
Br2 - oxidizing agent (reduced).
We have both reduction and oxidation in one reaction so no electrons needed - i.e. this aint no half reaction.
