From another thread:

I think we should make a withdraw list to give other people hope and since almost everyone will be on some sort of waitlist at some point - who wants the honors of making an "official" list?

Another poster also suggested that we limit this list to people withdrawing post-acceptance from an actual MD/PhD spot (rather than withdrawing pre-acceptance, i.e., canceling an interview or withdrawing pre/post-interview), because that info would be most useful for people on waitlists.

Well, nobody was biting the bullet, so I thought I'd jump in.

NYU: Dodo23 (12/21)

I wanted to start an "official" thread but have never done this before; did I do it right?

Very impressive "official" thread. And four acceptances already! You should forget about those January finals and just celebrate/relax. (This conversation started in a different thread, but...) I almost started War and Peace yesterday, but wimped out.

Thanks, guys! :D I've been getting precious little work done so far this break; mostly I've been sleeping a lot and catching up with friends & family. Then I see one of those books lying around my room and I feel guilty.

And yeah, solitude, don't run too far ahead of me with War and Peace, because I'm not going to get to it any time soon. I need (and want) to finish The Brothers Karamazov first.

Dodo, how are we supposed to be life-long friends if we don't end up at the same school? I guess I'll have to visit you at whatever awesome school you choose :)

Your kindred spirit,
Pickles

Pickles,

In all sincerity, I hereby extend you an open invitation to come visit me wherever I end up next year. Besides general hanging out, taking a break from med school and talking about our favourite books, you can tell me all about your amazing travel experiences around the world and we can compare stories. It'll be a blast. :)

Your kindred spirit,
Dodo

So...how did you go about withdrawing post-acceptance? I think I'm going to have a hard time wording it since I kinda feel bad...

Don't worry about it; MD-PhD program directors & administrators have pretty thick skins. Rejection is part of the business. And remember that they reject far more applicants than applicants reject them. Just write something like:

"I am sorry to tell you that I will not be joining your program. I appreciate the opportunity you offered me, but I have come to realize that the program at X is a better fit for me personally. I enjoyed meeting you and hope that we will meet again."

The most important thing to remember is that you should notify a program as soon as you have eliminated it from consideration. This is big help to that program and your fellow MD-PhD applicants, as it allows the program to go to its wait list and make an offer to another person. The school you turn down may be the dream school for someone on the waitlist. So, do not delay in delivering the rejection news to a program; they would rather get the bad news sooner than later.

Time to start wrapping this process up.

So it'll come down to between Emory and WashU? Will it be totally up to you or does your gf have a say?

Penn and Michigan are still in the mix. At this point, I am contacting individual faculty members who I was unable to meet during my interview. Trying to also get a hold of students in their labs and ask about the work environment and the quality of mentoring. This is very important for me since for my research interests, I will usually only have 1 or 2 faculty at each school to choose from.

I am pretty much open to go anywhere at this point. Going to Emory would make my life significantly easier but I would be getting my PhD and B.S. from the same institution. We will see. Still have sometime to decide.

How about you? You took your MD Apps profile down so no one can keep up with your 200 interviews and acceptances anymore. Any idea where you might end up?

Hah, probably actually. I liked it, it's just the town/south/distance from home that gets me. I really liked UMDNJ-RWJ and I'm pretty sure that's where I'll end up. (Though if Penn ever decides to offer me an interview/acceptance, that might become a harder decision.)

I think I'm going to go to second look at VCU though, so I feel like I gave richmond a fair chance... I loved the research there & the school, i just wish it wasn't in VA!

I feel sad withdrawing from the program, which I really did like quite a bit...and which was the first one to be brave enough to accept me . But I don't think I could see myself choosing it over Northwestern...

anyone think of any reason i should hold onto a pitt acceptance with stanford? i didn't want to start a whole new thread about this, so i thought maybe this was an ok place to ask. stanford seems a lot more flexible and happy, which i like, with a great student attitude. there have been some concerns in the past about their status with NIH, however, and I have not been able to find info on how that ended up. pitt integrates clinical and research better and is clearly a good program, but i didn't get a good vibe there at all.

i should decide today because i need to figure out pitt revisit stuff. i'm disinclined to miss more work.

withdrawing from irvine, sinai, and rochester this week in all likelihood

stanford >> pitt

I just want to play devil's advocate for a moment and look beyond rankings. Stanford is a research-heavy school in general, which may mesh well with some and not with others. But the research "culture" there, and the MSTP makes no exception, may be so strong that you may be swayed toward a 100% research career. They seem to have more MSTP grads doing 100% research than from other programs. Personally I'd like to have a choice with clinical stuff, without any pressure otherwise.

I wasn't referring to rankings...my opinion is based solely on intangibles, like where would I want to live for the next 8 years.

yes, this is definitely an impression i got as well and a bit of a concern. i would say that even those in the straight md program at stanford are probably less likely to go into typical practice. however, it definitely doesn't seem to *preclude* clinical training... i wonder about this, since NIH seems to be pushing for more integrated MSTPs.

I just returned (today, actually) from Stanford. It's not just a /sense/ that the MSTP administration doesn't really care all that much about the clinical aspect of things since Drs. Barsh and Kim said that they leave the clinical concerns to the med school administration to sort out! Also, they make no bones about the fact that there is no discernible MD + PhD integration...it just seems as though the MSTP is an MD program and a PhD program mashed together. But if that doesn't matter to you, then it's great otherwise!

I heard that was the case as well with Columbia?

Actually I adored Columbia...they seem to be making more of an effort at integration, undergoing a major curricular overhaul. However, yes, they do make a big deal about getting a "real PhD." But, and this is specific just to me, Columbia is in NYC (my second favorite city!) and has really amazing research in my field of study...so I'm biased :).

Stanford is full of stanford kids, so you'll hae that to deal with/enjoy. Busy silicon valley people, renting an expensive condo for 8 years.....The place is incredible. Dean Pizzo gave a talk a while back about how he want's all his MDs to consider getting a phD. that's gonig to lead to a great environmnent.

If Columbia rejects me, Mount Sinai it is... if Columbia accepts me, I actually have a really difficult decision to make... more difficult than I anticipated. Great problem to have though .
