Anyone else get a long email from Indiana that almost sounds like an invite but asks if you would even be interested in interviewing there? At first it seemed personal but I get the impression they're sending it out to everyone they want to interview to gauge interest.

These people are all capable of faking it through a few 20 minute zoom interviews, believe me lol. It’s better than nothing but a full day of in person interaction is much different. Im excited to see where they end up and might consider sending some flowers and a condolences card to the program directors

A fantastic perspective to have amid a global pandemic where everyone is trying to do their best. Even the program directors.

I applied there and did not get that email. I'm guessing it's a good sign for you!

This is a great comment.

Here is my question, then: I scored well on the CBSE, I have several first author chapters/publications. Multiple mission trips. International travel for oral and poster presentations for research. I have an additional graduate degree. I was top 20 in my class at a very good dental school. I am now doing a non categorical year. Why do I have less than 5 interviews this year?

All I’m looking for is the logic in selecting dental students with half their D4 years abandoned by COVID vs the many others in my same shoes for these interviews. Any current residents or anyone affiliated with a program, I’d greatly appreciate a comment.
I will give you a Program Directors thought process on selecting who interview.
There are essentially 6 things I look at for candidates to interview:
1. GPA
2. Class Rank
3. CBSE
4. Externships
5. Letters of Recc.
6. Intangibles

If your school does not have GPA/Class rank I will weigh more heavily on CBSE to tell me about your scholastic level prowess. Externships are a must, with COVID this has been difficult so there is a bit of leeway there. But hopefully you had 1-2 prior to COVID. I can tell you that at the U of MN, where I am interim department director and program director, the SOD has stopped all outside externship opportunities for students so this will certainly cause problems in the next cycle. Letters of recc: PLEASE DO NOT HAVE NON-OMS LETTERS OF RECC. A general dentist or prosthodontist does not know what OMS residency is and I essentially ignore those letters. You need at least one letter from a program director or a chairmans letter of recc. from your institution and hopefully one letter from a different institution. It shows that the applicant has been away from home. Lastly, the intangibles. This can be as simple as something like a unique letter if intent / personal statement. I cannot tell you how many letter I read that the student found their "passion" for OS. Really? a passion. I think those statements are hokey and insincere. I like to read a personal statement that tells me something about you. BUT DO NOT PANDER. " Oral Surgery changes lives" really?, 95% of OMS practitioners take out wisdom teeth, that changes lives. I call BS on those types of letters. Essentially, summarize your education and tell me something about you personally and get my attention, "I like to windsurf" Stuff like that. For you, tell me about your mission trips in your personal statement, those sound cool, are fun to read and engaging.

For you personally, I cannot comment as I do not have your application. But based on your statement above it sounds like you may be coming on a bit too strong and spent a bit too much time researching. Do you have fun or only eat, sleep and crap OS. Really, that will not be good for residency. You need an outlet to blow off steam and your statement above makes it sound like you are trying too hard. Let's talk about research, sure, some programs like that but based on CODA standards there is barely enough time to complete OMS rotations that are required so research is generally a minor part of residency. Research doesn't tell me about your commitment to residency other than you had an opportunity that others don't necessarily get in dental school. Tell me about leadership skills, surgeons are leaders not robots and having leadership positions throughout your educations tells me you know how to manage people.

My favorite question that I ask candidates at interviews is "tell me a time when you had resolve a dispute between to people or something you failed at, how did you manage the dispute or how do you overcame the failure?" I want to know how people handle adversity and manage people. Believe it or not, it's a key component to surviving residency and also success in life.

Also, I cannot state this enough. I have known many qualified applicants who did an intern year, myself included. It is probably the best thing that ever happened to me in my training. Don't under estimate the value of learning hospital etiquette and what a good note is. It will set you up to hit the ground running in residency. It costs nothing other than time. I can tell you that when evaluating candidates I will always select a person with an internship over a fresh SOD 4th year. 4th years just have no idea what they are about to start unless they blow my socks off at the interview. It does happen, every year an SOD applicant will shine above all the others. Example, last year we took 4 residents, 3 with internships and one without. The one without the inter year was an interview all-star and externed with us and was a rockstar on the externship.

Lastly, and I don't want to sound crass, but maybe you are a terrible interview. Did you practice with OS faculty in your SOD? I think this is important as it will help you relax and understand why we have interview process. If I have asked you to come interview I believe you can succeed in my program. So the interview is more about are you a normal human? can you communicate effectively? Do you have a sense of humor? Can I see you representing me and my OS program throughout the hospital and community? Each year there are applicants that don't speak clearly, mumble, trip over words, are too serious, are too confident, among other issues. I want you to ask me more questions than I ask you as I want to know your are interested in the program. At the end of the interview I always ask if the applicant has any questions. If they do not have any questions that bothers me. You know everything already? really? Simple, ask me where I see the program in 5 years, ask me where I see the program changing, ask me what the strengths and weaknesses of the program are? Ask me if money was no object what would I change. These types os questions get me talking and engaging.

I hope this helps and good luck to everyone.

If there are students/Interns who want advice please feel free to contact me. [email protected]

Not crass at all, and many thanks for your direct reply and candor.

I was told at multiple interviews last year directly that I was a number one choice for them, and overall I thought interviews went well. Obviously I was, and am, frustrated about not matching and about how things are going now.

I unfortunately did not apply to your program this year, but would be happy to interview, even if off the record entirely, if you might be willing to have a conversation or provide feedback. Thank you again for your comment.
Email me anytime

Also was told I was their #1 by multiple programs haha. And here we are

Interesting. Multiple programs said specifically they were ranking you #1? I’m not knocking you, genuinely curious if this is something that happens.

Agree that it is curious. Programs are not supposed to inform applicants where they will be ranked, you can express interest but not define rank position. If they do that it is because they are trying to make you put them #1 so they can rank you lower as they have someone else they are looking at. It a backup plan for programs.

"You are our number #1 rank" Be very careful of that statement as it usually means that you are a back up but they like someone else but want you to rank them high in case that other applicant ranks another program higher. Remember, the match process is geared toward the applicants not the programs. If you rank School A number #1 but they rank you #5, you go to school A even if another candidate ranks them #3 and the program ranks them #3. The process is geared to reward the applicant. I hope this helps you guys and gals understand the process. Programs who tell people where they rank them tell everyone they are #1. Why would they not, there is not penalty.

I was told early in my application process in the 2000's that rank the programs based on where YOU want to go and live as you will be there for 4-6 years. Try not to base rank decisions on discussions with faculty, residents and other applicants. Make this process about you as much as possible because it is.

This is a fantastic article!

TLDR: "...Programs may be sacrificing interviews on candidates that have no intention of ranking them highly... programs may experience unmatched positions because of the disproportionate interviewing of a smaller group of more competitive applicants.

EDIT: I originally had a much longer comment elaborating on my personal experience during the trail so far, and I detailed how it agrees with many things that are touched on in the article. Applicants (including me) heard that everyone else was applying to 50+ programs due to the absence of financial constraints, and the herd mentality took over. Like making a run on the bank. No one wants to risk going unmatched, so we applied everywhere and every applicant is taking every invite they can cram into their schedule.
I can say from the U of MN our total applicant numbers went from 135 last year to 180 this year. Not what I would call a huge increase but significant. I am hoping the increase is due to my magnetic personality.......

this is assuming that candidate that ranked them #3 matched at either his/her 1st or 2nd choice. If not then he would match at School A before the one that was ranked number 5, correct?
correct

Looking for more clarification on this -- so programs email you telling you where they would rank you if you're a backup? And if you're not a "back up" they wouldn't reach out to you to show their interest in you? Or they just send everyone the same - "We're ranking you #1" email?

Does this happen often where programs have reached out to applicants only for them to be disappointed in the long run?
Trying to gauge if this is a serious pattern to be aware of or just sporadic unfortunate circumstances for some. :(
For clarification: There is rumor that programs will tell all applicants that they are their #1 rank so all of their applicants will rank them high. I have never been a party to something like this but the stories are so common there must be some truth.

My advice: Be careful of those types of communications. Programs are not supposed to discuss specific rank with any applicant just as applicants should refrain from telling programs where they will rank them. If a program is telling an applicant where they are being ranked I would question the motives.

Lastly, and I cannot stress this enough, only rank places you could/would live. Rank based on how you liked the programs. Not on how they "might" rank you.

Do thank you emails mean a lot to you as a PD? Does it actually influence anything? When does the program sit down and rank? How do you remember everyone?
Always send thank you emails. It may mean nothing to one program and a lot to another. Would you want to be ranked lower if that was someone's pet peve?

Send thank you's. But if thats what changes somebodies rank position???? That's a type of pettiness you do not want to be a part of. We rank right after interviews. We sit down as a faculty and the rank list is complete and final before the day is complete. But that is my program and I am sure others do it differently. In 2 weeks I will not remember every applicant unless they were stellar or terrible, so a thank you note/email is good but not required.

Do any applicants know of programs that are requiring in-person interviews? It appears that St. Johns (NY), LSU and UMKC are the only one that are in person. I would like to know if there are others and if a virtual was an option. No stress or judgement, just curious. U of MN debated the merits until the University admin said no in-person for anyone at the U.

UMKC is virtual. “We are planning to see you and all of the applicants virtually”

Thanks for the update/info everyone.

We (U of MN) just completed our Zoom applicant interviews. We had a few hiccups but the process was not that bad. I certainly prefer the in-person version as I love to talk about my program and I think applicants get a better sense of the culture and the facilities through in-person. Its a strange year and a strange interview cycle but let's hope its just one year and we can get back to normal next year.

Again, anyone who needs advice or has questions from a PD's standpoint please feel free to ask.

Would you say that applicants start with a clean slate once they get to interviews, or is the interview another “data point”? I’m assuming it’s program dependent? Thanks for the insight.

It varies by program of course. Some places are blank slate, some not. I know specific faculty who have a pre-interview and post-interview score they assign to every application and assign a final score methodically to make their rank list.

Personally, if I ask you to interview with my program it is because I believe you have the credentials on paper. I use interviews for 2 purposes.

1. I want to see how you are as a person. Do you speak well, clearly, can you articulate answers, would we be able to get along in the OR. It's also an interview of my program as anything else. I want you to see what I have to offer and make sure you want to come to my program. If the applicant doesn't like what they see please don't rank us.

2. I want to make sure you get along with my residents currently in the program. Every year 1-2 applicants rubs the residents the wrong way or says something stupid, or gets drunk at the dinner, or bitches about there current internship, or makes fun of other applicants, or puts down or criticizes faculty/staff/whatever. My residents participate 100% in our selection process and much more weight than I think most applicants understand. This probably happens at a lot of programs. ( I think ) So every year the residents at my program will ask us not to rank 1-2 or 3 applicants and I do not rank them.

So I would make sure anyone interviewing: act appropriate, have 1 drink if you want, speak well of other programs, applicants, residents, faculty and most of all make sure the residents know who you are and interview them as much as they interview you. You may be spending quite a bit of time with them.

Pertaining to the comment above: creating a ranking/scaling system to help is a common occurrence, I think. But I only know 2 programs as those are the only I have been involved with for the ranking process.

Hope this shed a bit of light.

Lol guess there are two kinds of programs. The kind where you get blackballed for getting drunk and the kind where not getting drunk gets you blackballed.

Applicant #19 or #20 for the Uni of Kentucky interview on Dec 3rd, if you happen to read this post by chance, can one of you please switch times with me? I am applicant #15 on Dec 3rd.

Please DM me if this is possible. Much appreciated.

Has anyone that received a MedStar phone call received a confirmation email from them yet?

Fantastic advice. Seeing people crash & burn at the dinner can be heartbreaking.

Anyone have any info on Howard OMFS?
Interviewed there last year, heavy L1 trauma center and sedation/dentoalveolar. Rotations at the VA, Medstar, and a hospital system in central VA. Program seemed to be in the middle of a transition since they got a new program director in the middle of the year last year. He seems to be really legit. Overall solid meat and potatoes kinda program.

So as interviews wind down and it’s time to make a rank list, do people reach out to programs or residents again? I feel like every program has ended with some variation of “here is my number/email so please reach out if you have any questions or need anything at a later date.” But some of these interviews were months ago.

I’d love to reach out to my favorite program and remind them how interested I am, but that seems awkward. Any thoughts on this?

I would recommend against it.
