Hey opt. students, is it common practise to prescribe oral meds these days? When I shadowed my optometrist (for almost a year), i think it barely ever happened.

Really good article to read! Helps if you've got a good pharmacology background

Dear Highly Fanatic,

In which state and in what environment will in most part determine the degree of use of oral medications. In most circumstances, most orals would be focused on lid or surface disease entities, viral keratitis (HSV or HZK), analgesia and occasionally for inflammatory suppression with NSAIDS or steroids.

Optometirsts who practice in medical settings or who see many "primary care" patients will most likely see the bulk of these kind of situations.

Regarding the "Optometric Therapeutic Authority, State by State" table in the second article... Is there an updated version anywhere??

thanks

thx for your response Dr. Hom, do you know where to find updated legislation information?

Dear HighlyFanatic,

Unfortunately, not. In my opinion, you should pick 5 states where you would like to practice and query their respective optometry boards.

Dr. Hom

That is great advise for anyone who knows where they want to practice. I, myself, was looking for an updated variation of that table just out of curiosity. I just wanted to see what type of progress has been made, and which areas today have the greatest/least privileges... I haven't run across one yet.
