hi just have a few questions regarding applying to ortho.

1. is having non-ortho LOR less important than having an ortho letter? like having it from other surgical subscpecialty.

2. is non ortho research valuable? again, in a different surgical specialty

Thanks

Ortho research is better than research in something else.

Having 2-3 ortho LOR (including one from your chairman) is required for many programs. A few places require a non-surgical LOR, but not many. From what I've seen a typical combination is: 1) chairman LOR, 2) home attending LOR from subi, 3) away rotation LOR, 4) PI/other. There are obviously many ways to do this, though.
