Parallel evolution and analogous structures?

According to cliff's, Parallel evolution is "two related species made similar evolutionary changes after their divergence from common ancestor". In a destroyer question, it says that the answer to a parallel evolution question is analogous structures, which share no common ancestor but perform similar functions. Wouldn't the answer be closer to homologous structures since they share an ancestor?

In parallel evolution you will see 2 lineages that SHARE a common ancestor will have similar traits since they live in similar environments, have similar environmental pressures, and will adapt accordingly in similar fashions. Note that the two lineages are related in the first place (related meaning closely related and they share a RECENT common ancestor).

Analogous traits occur in two lineages that are NOT related. These two lineages live in similar environments, have similar environmental pressures, and will adapt in similar ways. These shared adaptations between the two lineages are analogous traits. Note that the two lineages are not related (very distantly related would be the more accurate term).


The dat destroyer question you are asking about is question 42 in bio? If so, note that the question says "in separate lineages." Although it does say parallel evolution, the terms "in separate lineages" means that they are NOT closely related and thus the best answer would be analogous structures

Alright thank you so much! So parallel evolution can be the vocab word meaning same ancestor and evolving similarly as well as just describing species evolving in a similar fashion?

Yes.

For these types of questions (homologous vs analogous) the main thing you need to figure out in the question is are the animals CLOSELY related or NOT CLOSELY related. If they are, you are looking at homologous structures most likely and if they are not you are looking at analogous structures most likely.
