I'm at a bit of a loss of what we need to know about this stuff, especially the pentose phosphate pathway. Do we need to know every step, production, reactant, intermediate, and structure of each compound for the mcat? or just have a general idea of what each metabolic process entails and its products/reactants and key intermediates? thoughts?

I don't think so. Know the basics of it ie that it produces NADPH and that it allows for the production of bases needed to make new DNA.
