pounds x miles x .00123 (or, how to estimate a DITY move)

.00123

That's the number you need to know.

If you multiply (pounds of your crap) x (distance from desolate military base to forlorn military base) x .00123, you will be within 2% of your "take".

For instance, I have 4500 pounds of junk.
I'm moving 272 miles.

4,500 pounds x 272 miles x .00123 = 1505

The move.mil site gave me a figure of 1525. Pretty dang close.

Now you just need to figure out how much your shtuff weighs. It always weighs more, and takes up more room, than you would think. But don't ask for the full sum in advance, unless you want to take the chance of having your future pay docked.

For the record, this is just so you can estimate whether it would be worth your time and the headache. I've done it both ways, and having the military move you is certainly MUCH easier. But it's your decision, and my dity move also went well, and none of my stuff got scratched up like in the military-procured move.
