Hello all,

IMG here, interested in applying for Surgery this match. ERAS application has a section where you need to mention "PGY 2 Speciality interest(s)" in-case applying for preliminary position.
I like Surgery and plastics. If I mention both these fields as my PGY2 speciality choice, will it look bad for the application (considering a general surgery program may not want to have a prelim resident who is interested in Plastics), or stick to General Surgery as the PGY2 Choice, or just leave it blank.

I appreciate your opinion.

Regards

Yes, it will look bad.

Unless you are applying for a Designated Prelim position or are using the Prelim GS year as an intern year for Rads, Anesthesia, etc., please put General Surgery for your PGY-2 plans.

Thank you very much. I am interested in Head Neck Surgery, In my country this is a domain of General Surgery followed by Surgical Oncology. However in US, its done by General Surgeons and ENT as well. I was just wondering if Gen Surg residency have a strong experience in Head Neck Surgeries (Thyroid, Parotid etc.)

Thanks

First off, general surgery residencies here will train you to do thyroids, parathyroids, and radical/modified radical neck dissections.

Literally all other head/neck oncologic procedures I can think of (short of a lymph node biopsy) would fall under the domain of ENT or OMFS.

So you need to be clear about what your interests are and do a little more research into the appropriate residency options.

Within general surgery residencies, the proficiency of training for thyroid/para is highly variable depending on local referral patterns and the relative strength of the general surgery endocrine/oncology folks vs the ENTs. Some programs residents get 100+ cases, others the residents scrape to get their minimum case numbers.

Thank you very much for your opinion. I did go through numerous program websites and short listed those that have mentioned regarding Head Neck surgery experience, I am very excited to apply to these programs, hoping they consider my head neck surgery background experience in my home country.
