Looks like net minus 20 spots since 2019?

When I stop hearing about the 50 other unsolicited job resumes from ROs being received by the recruitment Dept, I’ll feel better.

MDACC needs to be applauded for officially shrinking their program from a position of strength were they could obviously still fill with high quality grads. No other program has done this in the last 10 or 15 years if ever. These types of moves are noticed.

Also note that since the 2019 (current pgy 4’s) through the 2021 (current pgy 2’s) match there have been approximately 90 positions offered in the SOAP. Obviously most of these are filling outside the first round of the match with 42 current openings in this time span. Also keep in mind of the current 42 positions that are not filled at least some of these are the result of people transferring out of the speciality, although these numbers are impossible to come by, I would guess it’s easily over 10 in this time frame.

Doesn’t NCI usually fill positions outside the match? I’m actually surprised their residency program is closed since a lot of residents who were in the military would do their training there.

I want to say the nci was in the match. I knew a couple of people who trained there and they were not military. Could be that military were given preference though.

West Virginia U and Texas A and M should be the next two programs to close in my opinion due their chronic inability to keep their programs full.

Didn't Mississippi and tenn have issues as well in the past?

They have been outside the match for at least the last 10 years. They have trained both military and well-known civilian radoncs that became chairman: Ted Lawrence, Steve Hahn, Baldassarre Stea, Charles Simone (undoubtedly will be one soon) and others.

Like MDACC, NCI and their affiliates saw the writing on the wall and just felt that it wasn’t the right thing to continue to train residents. They showed true leadership in voluntarily closing their program and should be commended.

Surprisingly Mississippi has not been in the soap in the past 5 match cycles. Tenn was soaping in 2019 and 2020. Mississippi currently has 3 of 4 positions filled which probably means someone transferred out. Tenn is currently listed as being on “continued accreditation with warning” for some non public reason.

warnings are never public AFAIK. I've worked at a program with a warning, and it was simply a basket case of misfortunes

Chuck is a Medical Director at the NY Proton Center. Not sure what that says about NCI program :)
