Hey people,

It just went silent all of a sudden in here.

How are y'all doing? Did we get our applications published yet?
Anybody know how many applicants this year?

Seems like the upcoming week is the first week of interview invites....trepidation is setting in here...

PS - will anyone be at the ACS meeting in DC or PS 2013 in San Diego? It could be fun to find each other and hangout at these meetings.....

Will be submitting early this week. Waiting for SF match to post my LOR's, which they received last week. Can call SF match to find out how many applicants thus far probably?

I'm struggling with whether to apply in June and was hoping to get some advice. My goal is to be competitive for a top 5 or 10 program and my concern is whether or not this is realistic given where my application will be by next cycle. Quick rundown: went to a top 3 undergrad, middle to top tier med school, and am in a middle tier residency program with no plastic surgery residency and a very small (read: two faculty) plastics department. My board scores are 250+ (Step 3 pending). ABSITE have been around 80th. Will likely have three publications (one nonsurgical) by application time and a poster. My letters will be from a well known PD/chair, the plastics chair here who is well known in the Northeast but likely not nationally, and another Gen Surgery faculty member who I've worked closely with.

If I did not apply in June, I would finish out residency and look for a one year plastics research position. That could help me in two ways: could get me more publications and get me a letter from another plastics faculty member. The concern there, though, is if I also risk losing potential opportunity to match at a great program as more and more convert to integrated.

Thoughts? Sorry if this is beating a dead horse, but I'd really appreciate the feedback.

I'm in research right now having struggled with the same decision.

You're numbers seem pretty competitive. The independent track is not nearly as hard to get in to as it once was, but if your goal is to get in to a "top" program then maybe it is a good idea. Although the match rates have gone up drastically, I don't think places like NYU, Harvard, etc. are struggling to find strong applicants.

That being said, it seems like the general belief from the attending level members on here is that there are still some very high quality independent programs in terms of clinical training. If your goal is to be the chair at MD Anderson some day then having a big name obviously helps. If that's not your goal, then I would say just get done with your training. It's a long road as it is.

any updates on the # of registered this year? I emailed them last week... no reply. Anybody heard back from any programs yet?

I would think u're pretty competitive as you are, but not getting enough research is always a big drawback. I guess it all depends on what your goal is.
If you're hell-bent on matching at MD Anderson, or Harvard or something, you should aim for your perfect application. But if you're just looking for great training at a decent institution, then you can throw your hat in the ring now.
That said, I'm happy I did my research time. I would be too scared to apply now if I didn't.

Quick questions on the CAS, just to make sure I'm not misreading stuff.

1. The USMLE transcript web page says we don't need to submit separately if we're submitting FCVS - assuming this is true for those whom FCVS has verified?

2. The APBS form says that it has to be submitted before beginning training - that means we just have to submit it after the match but before July 2015, right?

Thanks and good luck to all!

Umm, I agree with statement 1.
But you have to submit the ABPS letter before your application is uploaded and sent out...

I applied to 49 programs.
I'm seeing 47 active programs for this cycle when searching programs through SF Match. It started at 49 a few months back but Dartmouth and UPenn dropped spots.

The two programs that I applied to that are not on the active program list are USC and Medical College of Georgia at Georgia Regents University. I wonder if I can get some money back? So only 47 programs.

Oh yeah, I forgot they dropped, too. I guess it couldn't hurt to ask? Oh the ever-shrinking number of programs... good thing only us hard-core dedicated types are willing to add 3+ years on to our training.

We should make a list of all the places that have dropped spots from last year to this year. What I have now:
1.Cleveland Clinic
2.USC
3.Dartmouth
4.UPENN
5.Medical College of Georgia
6.Albany Medical College
7.UCI (Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery Institute)
Does that seem right?
Last year was 54 Programs this year 47. lowest since 2008. Good news is last year 86% match rate.

are interview invites trickling out yet?

I got interviews at Temple and Mississippi. Are you all getting offered all the dates at once?

U of Iowa recently added to the independent program list for the match. Also taking someone out of the match to start July 2013.

It seems as if all interviews are sent out on the same day. I'm not absolutely sure, but talking to some friends it seems that way.

Are you saying they added these dates to the ACAPS list of interviews from the previous list or are you letting everyone know all the interviews you are taking?
