Question about gen surgery practice

Hi i'm a premed applying for next year's med school class but i have a question about general surgery.

After residency...

do most surgeons start working at hospitals or begin their own practice?

How do surgeons split up their private practice time with their hospital time to make the 250K average?

Moneys not really a big concern but i'm just curious...
