I go to a school that uses the quarter system, but I also took summer classes at a college that did semester. When I look at the calculation system on AMCAS it seems as if semester classes are weighed more when doing the GPA. Is this true?

Yep. Semester credits count 1.5 times as much quarters. Or, if you like, quarter credits count 2/3 as much as semesters.

What I'm hearing though, is this: "I usually have good grades, but I took some summer classes and got my butt kicked, since I was drunk/stoned all summer. Surely those grades can't count MORE than my other grades."

Yep, they do, but don't worry about it. One semster isn't enough to sink you.
