My parents would have preferred ours not have come. Bills for days.....

I'm just going to nod my head and roll with it at this point. When I get moved to Nebraska, I'm going to follow DVMD's advice, google all the federal holidays, and write them down so my confusion doesn't repeat. I can't believe it's taken me 13 years of being in the work force to actually notice this pattern.
you'll learn to love it in school :)

The hospital I was doing research at had a doctor who told me about how she took the NAVLE (and passed) as a third year so I figured I would too. Looked into eligibility to take it and you have to be 11 months from graduating, or 8 months in California =/ Talked to one of the new interns and he said that he was pretty sure that only just changed because he thought you could take it as a third year when he took it last year.

Also, I've been home less than a week and had to go to the ER after falling off of my horse because I sprained my wrist and now I have to see ortho on Monday. So much for horse showing next weekend! Plus, I was splinted and now I have median nerve compression and can't feel my thumb. Apparently it can take days to weeks to regain feeling :(

My right arm/shoulder has been trying to murder me for 3-4 months. Apparently it's a cervical radiculopathy problem. Going back to the dr on Monday to talk about my MRI. And hopefully he has an answer other than "surgery" because ain't nobody got time for that (for at least two years).

sorry. I know all too well how much wrist injuries suck. Let it heal and follow the ortho's recommendations

sometimes you have to take time for that. especially with nerve damage. take care of yourself.

:( It just sucks because I have been having health issues (that may, in retrospect be related to this) for the past 7 years. I have done my damndest to fight the odds and get to where I am today. (People with what I have are often bedridden so it's no small feat that I'm pushing through.) And then this comes up. And it could supremely ruin my plans for an internship. And it just sucks majorly :(

it won't ruin your plans for an externship. It may delay them. But if that's your goal, it's your goal. and you can still work towards it AFTER getting your health under control.

Definitely. I want to go to into surgery so I plan on taking care of both of my hands. No use in potentially ruining my dream! But it will make scrubbing in a little difficult for the next few weeks. Plus, I want to enjoy my time being home in Florida and being one-handed makes that difficult.

if you're in my area you're welcome to come say hi.

Btw, I've had 7 hand/wrist surgeries and have no issues doing surgery (well, I can't scrub in right now due to a cast, but you get the point). Anyway, I'm near the tampa area if you want to stop by

Caught the flu or something this weekend and woke up to find my grandma died last night. Time to go back to sleep and just pretend this day isn't happening.

Sorry hedgie. :(

Universe decided it wasn't going to let me off easy. The last hour of my on call week, 7 AM this morning, 2 year old pug in status epilepticus. Euthanized. ****.

Thanks! I may just have to do that.

Found out today that the radiologist at the ER can't read radiographs... I have a distal radial fracture and I'm getting a cast on Monday :(

So sorry for your loss, hedgie :( :( :(

So my MRI was largely negative (though I do have a contralateral disk protrusion at C6-C7 which makes no sense whatsoever). Going for an EMG tomorrow.

Thanks everybody! I stayed in and had an ice cream sundae for dinner. I think my grandma would approve.

All that money I get to save on tuition thanks to scholarships? Yeah, a large chunk will have to be taken out in loans to cover dental surgery that my supposedly good insurance won't cover much of. ._. I knew things were going too well.

I just found out my son's father had another baby. Awesome, baby #3 that he likely won't take care of! I found out via a picture on FB. So many people commented on the photo that they couldn't believe he "helped make a whole person." Clearly they don't know he has two teenage sons on the other side of the country that he hasn't seen in 10+ years and doesn't pay child support for.

Oh, and I think they named the kid "Danger". I know he likes unique names, but really?

My BF's little niece's biological mother is preggers with her 5th kid at 25. With the 7th guy she's been in love with over the past two years. This woman broke into my brother-in-law's car, stolen car seats, stalked the house, accused him of abuse, and has been accused herself of dealing drugs. She doesn't have custody of any of her 4 current kids, and wonders why she can't see them.

Every family seems to have the black sheep. It's really frustrating when the children are absolute sweethearts and don't understand why their black sheep parent isn't accepted by the rest of the family.

Uh huh. Just wait until you misread some radiographs some day.......

Oh, I know it will happen and have no issues with anyone missing something subtle. It happens, and that's life and that's why you follow up with your primary ;) However, ortho showed me the radiographs. It wasn't subtle. There was a lot more that went on at that ER to give me cause for concern than just the radiology interpretation.

[edit] and he literally couldn't read radiographs. The machine broke.

I managed to get in to see one of the fantastic orthopods in my area, but thank you :) I'm about an 1-1.5 hours out of Tampa -- I miss the days that I drove up there every other weekend for horse shows!

44 appointments in 2 days with 2 sedated procedures in the mix. I'm so done. Unfortunately the piles of paperwork on my desk says otherwise. What pisses me off is that the cases that I did a really good job with either end up poorly in the end or with ungrateful owners. I'm so done I'm so done im so done.

Reminds me of when my ex-stepdad posted a "woe is me" status about his kids not wanting to talk to him, and all his family and friends were like "Oh you're such a good father, teenagers are just that way sometimes."
Pffft. Made me wonder what kind of lies he had been telling them.

I'm a colossal idiot.

I've been waffling over whether to leave my current job. A new place opened up at the end of May, and their jobs page said they were looking for assistants for all shifts. I was one click away from applying last week, but I choked because I'm so uncomfortable with leaving a job that isn't quite working for me but isn't terrible. I was going to apply now, but when I went to their jobs page to fill out the application, the opening for assistants was gone. And their page explicitly says not to call or email about jobs. So now I really AM stuck.

Maybe you could stop by in person to see if they'd let you fill out an application? It could be all the positions are filled and unfortunately it's too late, but you never know, taking the initiative to dress nicely and come in might convince them to give you a shot! Especially considering you've got experience.

I definitely know the feeling of being reluctant to leave a job that's not working out, but not terrible. Back in March I was so ready to leave my clinic job, mainly due to another tech who was being borderline verbally abusive towards me, but things have since gotten better and I'm not so sure. One of our former techs whom I really enjoy working with came back for the summer, so it's a lot easier to deal with the unpleasant tech, and we're no longer as understaffed, so I'm not constantly being asked to work extra hours. I'd feel bad leaving at this point, because we've had several receptionists quit recently, so our office manager is struggling to hire yet another new one, and I'd hate to stick her with having to hire/train a new tech as well. Also I've decided I really do need a LOR from one of the vets there.

But I know it's still in my best interests to leave, because come end of summer when my favorite tech leaves again, things will probably go back to the way they were before. Also I'm sorely in need of LA experience for Mizzou, and with my current schedule (I work another, non-vet med job as well), there's really no way to fit in shadowing on the side. If I can even find an LA/mixed animal clinic willing to let me shadow, because last year the one equine clinic I found that looked promising would never return my calls. But I guess mainly this is a rant at myself that over three months have flown by in which I've made zero real effort to find a better job/shadowing opportunity. :bang:

I've got emergency experience, too, and to be honest, I prefer it to GP. I guess going in person is the best and only real option at this point. They're trying to expand and do specialty, too, so they're actively looking for specialists and may be expanding soon. It's just going to be tricky because I'm working six days in a row and would like to go in sometime during the typical 9-5 to try to catch someone from management. I'm just really angry at myself for not just applying.

Similar situation here. The place is severely understaffed. During my first two weeks, they had 3 assistants leave and then one or two people from other positions. And they were already a little short staffed to begin with. I'd feel bad leaving, but their scheduling and management is just not something I'm going to be able to deal with long term. They were vague about the scheduling and how random it'd be when I was hired, and I'm also kicking myself for not asking specific questions. I was just glad to be getting ANY offer out here. Lesson learned, the hard way. They're also not going to be able to work with me when I need to take biochem in the fall, so this is going to be bad if I can't find another position.

Yeah. Better to start looking now even if you won't be leaving there right away, especially if you know things are going to get worse. I'm with you on the LA stuff. Everything is so far away from where I am now, and we're new to this state and area. I had connections back in NY but didn't have time to set up shadowing, and then, poof, my husband moved us out here. So many stupid mistakes. :bang:

My last day is officially one month away. They have only interviewed one person. There are only 3 people, including myself, capable of working my position. My last day is the day after one of those 3 people goes on vacation for a week, leaving one person to work every single shift for a week with no lunch break. I feel bad, but I gave them 8 months notice! I know it's not my problem, but I really like this co-worker that is being royally screwed.

I've had a bad headache since 10am yesterday morning. Missed my first day of clinics because of it. Can't eat because it hurts to chew. Never had a headache this long before

So apparently, one of the animals (thinking either my guinea pigs or the kitten) brought in Cheyletiella mites because the rabbit I'm watching over the summer apparently has them all of a sudden (he was brought in for other reasons). Could have been my dog, but I'd be surprised if it was him tbh. I'm leaning towards the pigs or the kitten, although I'm surprised neither big developed an outbreak when I brought the new one in back in first year...but who knows. Now everyone gets Revolution (which is the one product I don't have for my dog) and the who house needs to be cleaned. Oh, and I have to tell my other roommate who is away for the month that she needs to treat her cat too.

Had my first real crying jag at work yesterday. Got treated with kid gloves today. *sigh*

I've never encountered a rabbit that doesn't have some cheyletiella mites. I'd be surprised if the rabbit you're watching didn't already have them. When I was raising rabbits, the mites only became noticeable when my rabbits were old, sick, or stressed and not grooming themselves regularly.

This guy hasn't been the healthiest for a while which is why they think it might have come from one of the other animals but it's always a possibility that he did have them before.

Apparently I'm not the only person not working in my apartment complex right now. Unfortunately, those other people are the douchey bro's who live upstairs - the ones who blast music 12 hours a day and throw all of their beer bottles, cans, and cigarette butts off the balcony into the courtyard.

Also, my rabbit tried to fly off the bathroom counter last night when I was cleaning out her ear and ended up chipping her top incisors so I'm not too happy about that.

Old car has been washed, vaccuumed, cleaned to within an inch of it's life, inspection sticker good for another 22 months and has a "make an offer" price tag and.... no bites yet. Ugh.

My first day at work: "We're not a boarding facility, so we usually don't have very many boarders. We discourage clients from coming to us for boarding unless they don't have other options. There are 3 treatment shifts every weekend for taking care of boarders, and one person comes in for each of those shifts, but a lot of the time it's just the hospital dog who needs to be taken care of."

My first treatment shift: 9 dogs (one of which is usually recumbent and requires a 2-person sling walk if it hasn't peed and pooped in its run and another which is aggressive and lunges at people) and 5 cats (one of which hasn't been eating and has had to be syringe fed at least once a day for the past 3 days)

YAYYYYYY.

I'm extremely fortunate that one of my coworkers offered to come in with me.

I hate dealing with tv/internet providers.

I have the option between DISH, DIRECTV, or Time Warner Cable at my new place. I wasn't at all impressed with DISH's packages/prices. I liked the idea of DIRECTV, but they wouldn't give me accurate billing information with all fees, taxes, etc. without first offering up my payment info and SSN for a soft credit check.... and paying $1 to "reserve" my package while also setting up a tentative installation date. Giving that info made me really uncomfortable and I had to stop the representative twice as she read the disclosure statement to reassure me that I would not be charged any weird fees if I chose to cancel the order before installation since I was still "shopping around." TWC was also kind of pushy, but, supposedly, they don't use contracts and I can cancel their service any time without cancellation fees, which honestly, makes me far less uncomfortable. What I didn't like about TWC is that they basically wouldn't let me create my own package with just tv and internet. I don't want phone service. I don't need 200 channels and I don't need 30 mbps internet speed. I was told that bloated package is a good $20 bucks cheaper than the combined services I wanted which could be true or it could be a lie. The rep also couldn't or wouldn't tell me how much that bloated package would cost 12 months out.

I was at least amused when one of the DIRECTV reps tried to engage in small talk (likely scripted).

Rep: I see you're from Ohio. I always found the Great Lakes to be really inspiring. Have you visited them?
Me: Probably?
Me (internally): WTF:rolleyes:

Calculated my expenses and bills for the next few months, and realized that with my current job situation (which will hopefully improve, but I'm not counting my chickens before they hatch), it'd be impossible for me to pay rent, bills, loans, and eat. So I just applied for forbearance for the majority of my loans.
Hoping that in the next month I can turn my job situation around and still have money to pay down my loans while they're in FB, but being a graduated bachelor's student that's only been able to find various part time work for the last semester took it's toll on my bank account.

Is forbearance the only option you were given from whatever company manages your loans?

When I called with a similar financial situation, my loan provider had me sign up for IBR for a year which actually makes my payments $0 right now on both of my loans since I'm waiting to start a job and don't have an income yet. That was recommended over forbearance. I can still pay whatever I can afford towards my loans but I get the benefits of being on a repayment plan (vs. being in forbearance) and I don't have to re-submit the paperwork for IBR until next year even after I start my job which will hopefully give me some time to re-build my savings post-graduate school.

I hadn't even considered that. I heard a couple bad stories about IBR, so it wasn't really on my radar. I'll contact my provider and ask about it.
