Safari Users -- Are You Seeing These Ads??

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

I don't usually get ads since I'm a donor but I've been getting these for a few days, randomly. No apparent pattern. Anyone else?

Yea I'm getting those on Chrome for iOS also. Annoying as ****. But this should be posted in another forum. Do we have a tech support one?

Looks like it is a legitimate ad: I do see it on my iPhone when I am not signed in, but it disappears if I sign in. It is possible that this is a "forum sponsor ad" since I am a Gold Donor.

per https://forums.studentdoctor.net/index.php?account/upgrades

Bronze Donor:
No Google Ads on forums

Gold Donor:
No Forum Sponsor ads
No Google Ads on forums

Hm, perhaps they changed their rules as far as ads are concerned as they related to donor status. I sent in a help desk request, so maybe that will clear things up.

Can you post a screenshot please? I'm curious if it has the slider frame thingy or if the ad is embedded. For the life of me, I can't re-create this issue on my iPhone on Safari.

lol, all of a sudden I can no longer repro on my iPhone, so I tested it out on Chrome instead because it bugged me.

yeah, I know. I am just confirming for @Stroganoff.
It's getting harder to find those ads; it almost seems like it knows I am looking for it.

additional information: the tab looks like an overlay/iframe, if you click on the grey bars/knob, the ad disappears from the page
@BluMist , as you can see, mine looks identical. I even get the same ad. The "synack" thing.

It's entirely possible that it's an error secondary to the switch over to https. I figured out what was screwing up the login thing btw- I use Google to look up SDN threads, and Google directs to the http version of the site, forcing me to log back in. Every. Single. Time.

Thanks for pointing this out. That means the http-->https URL rewrite isn't being thorough. In other words,

* When typing in forums.studentdoctor.net, it correctly rewrites it to https://forums.studentdoctor.net
* When going directly to a specific thread/post, it won't rewrite to https but allows http.

Should've got the app when it was free! No ads on the app for me.

It's also been a major issue since my history has SDN stored as http://forums.studentdoctor.net, so out I type foru, for instance, to bring up forums.studentdoctor.net in my search bar, the http version is what my browser directs me to, not the https version. Maybe if we clear our history it will fix it, but the cost of that for me would be painful, as I've got a lot of stuff stored for quick reference in my url bar in my history. I guess I could go through and bookmark everything...

Also, two step authentication doesn't fix https login issues like I'd originally thought, for obvious reasons.

it is time to clear that browser history ;)

in all seriousness, I face the same thing. I have SDN showing up on the Chrome default page, and that still links to the http:// version.

Adjusted my "Favorite" link the the https address from http. Still seeing ads.

I'm a shameless adblock user, yet in the last few months SDN seems to have whitelisted itself. Not sure how I managed to unintentionally do that.

So how does this affect our adware hypothesis?
I no longer think it's adware or more nefarious malware. What BluMist said:

it means your phone is fine: it's not adware but seems like a legitimate (though maybe incorrect) ad from SDN
Could be incorrectly applied ad, but it's coming from SDN. I retract my statement in the other thread.

Whitelist SDN! [/guilt tripping you] I do...I either donate or support with ads. I still navigate the Web with protection (like Ghostery, used to also use AdBlock Plus) but always whitelisted sites to which I was a regular.

Thanks for letting me know about the 'pagelevel' ads - those should not be displaying for donors. I've removed the coding.

IRT whitelisting: SDN sponsorship ads meet AdBlockPlus requirements (no animated ads, pop-ups, etc) and were whitelisted by ABP. Unfortunately, use of adblockers, even with whitelisting have caused our operating revenues to be cut in half over the past year.

yeah, I don't have a reason to un-whitelist SDN, but holy crap are there some seriously bad (usually news) sites out there for intrusive, loud, browser-slowing ads. (plus, I use firstrowsports in lieu of cable)
