After going through the topic outlines for the new MCAT, it seems to me that there's a significant amount of biochem but most of it can be self-studied. Can anyone else agree?

My plan is to use EK to get down all the necessary information, use Kaplan/TPR and Khan Academy to supplement and then use TBR for practice passages. Will this be enough or is taking the class absolutely necessary?

I'm thinking about taking the MCAT in August.

there are many people including myself who are doing the same and taking may mcats. its a means to an end, not an end to a means...

If those resources are not thorough enough for you (most likely they will) you can take a look at this free biochem textbook pdf:
http://biochem.science.oregonstate.edu/biochemistry-free-and-easy

It also links to associated lectures on youtube in each section so it has everything a typical lecture will have + an easy to read textbook.

Beat me to it! I watched his youtube videos "Bite Sized Biochem" I think that's what he titled it. He has several playlists on youtube. I watched them all while I was taking the course and Aced it. The prof's name is Kevin Ahern. He's very interesting. If you need to you can speed up youtube videos 2x. Highly recommended.

So I had a question. At my school under the chemistry department, biochemistry is split into two semesters, in which metabolism of lipids, glycolisis and the citric acid cycle are covered in the second semester. I have just taken the first semester which covered a lot on enzyme kinetics and proteins (particularly hemoglobin). I can't take the second semester of biochemistry next fall because of a schedule conflict and I plan on taking the MCAT in the spring. Would it be advisable/feasible to self-study topics as lipid metabolism, glycolisis, and the citric acid cycle? I plan on studying now over the summer to prep myself, especially by reading through my textbook, doing MCAT prep questions, and online videos. Thanks!

Sorry to necropost, but I did a search for "biochemistry self study" and nothing else came up in the app's search results.

Is the advice given by Allen18328 still the best available advice?

I would LOVE to take an actual university biochemistry course, but for a number of reasons that isn't going to work for me.

I am already going through Kaplan's Biochemistry book and it doesn't seem tough (or foreign) so far, though I'm not really deep into it yet.

Thanks in advance!
