Short term research with residents at desired specialty department vs long term project at school?

Which is more worth while: Helping out residents with their research (possible coauthorship) with the potential chance of forming relationships with important people (i.e. PD), or picking up a long term (but less prestigous but chance to get first author pub.) research project with a professor at my medical school? I want to do ortho and the latter would be more of anatomy based research, while the residents I would help would be pure ortho related.
