Strings/Open Pipes CLosed pipes

For standing waves: ie. open and closed pipes, strings

do you memorize the different formula L = wavelegnth lamda/ (some integer) or find it easy to derive on spot?

I am relying on derivating it on spot but i wonder...if this is the best/efficent way and how other people have studied for it.

I really didn't think the equations were that difficult to remember, so I planned to recall them from memory. It wasn't that big of a stretch for me to have them tucked away in my head. Otherwise, you may waste time trying to derive something.

I derive them. It's not too tough to visualize or draw a pipe/string/etc.

whats the simple rule for determining n? i know it varies for open/ closed pipe/ string
