I'm having a lot of trouble finding things to do over the summer. I got an unpaid part time internship lined up for May and I'm probably going to take the writing requirement + volunteer at my local hospital. It's pretty late for me to find summer opportunities in research, my interviews for internships have gone poorly, and my applications for research programs have resulted in nothing - all of these failures I now know why I messed up and looking forward I know what to fix.

But in the meantime, what are other suggestions on what else I could do? I'm looking for paid work, specifically, since I need to generate my own income this summer due to certain circumstances - I've considered a part time job, but a) I'm not sure in what field and b) I feel like there is still time to get an internship that I want.

1) Your paid work doesnt have to be in any specific field. Paid work is paid work. I mean, sure it's a bonus if it's health-related, but when you need money then you can't be picky. I'm sure if you can find work that would be even slightly enjoyable, whether it's tutoring or being a camp counselor, and that should be fine. You've already said that you'll be volunteering, so the health aspect of your summer is covered. If you have your heart set on a health-related job, depending on your location it may be possible for you to do CNA-like work without needing the certification, as places may be willing to give you training for these positions.

2) Apply for both the internship and jobs. It's always good to have contingency plans, or "parallel" plans as my mentor likes to call them. Depending on when you hear back from either of them, it gives you the opportunity to at least have something lined up. If you get the internship before you are hired, then you can always tell your potential employer that you've decided to pursue another opportunity. If you dont hear back from the internship before you are offered a job, then you have a little bit of room before you have to formally accept the paid employment, and basically you hope that the internship program gets back to you soon. Otherwise, at the very least you have a job.
