What if this situation occured: you did an internship in say FP, then you did a flight surgery tour. Are there restrictions to what specialty you can enter after that FS tour? Say you decided you wanted to do Ortho after an FP internship and a FS tour. Assuming you are fairly competitive with boards, class rank, LOR, etc.. and just decided you wanted something different after doing an operational tour, could you get another residency, one in which the internship that you completed does not count towards the residency (like FP internship then a surgery residency). Thanks!

Absolutely, people do it all the time. Although like you said you might have to repeat all or part of your internship depending on the fields involved.

I wouldn't say people do it all the time.

People change their ideas, but by far most will stick with a residency that their internship qualified them to apply for: GenSurg to Urology/ophtho/derm/etc IM to ER/Rads/Derm/ophtho/etc.

If you need to go back to make up an internship it puts you at a disadvantage. If you wanted to do ortho out of FP you would need to repeat the majority of internship and who knows if they'd be grading you for the residency or internship slot (someone previously on the GMESB might now that answer).

It can be done, but in all honesty, why oh why would you ever want to put yourself back through internship, no thank you.
