Taking Step II late

As a US grad, do you need Step II by rank list day to match?

I am taking mine this month and am considering delaying it by a week...but I feel like that may be a little risky in terms of not having scores back in time for Feb. 21. Or do you think programs have already decided where to rank people by Feb. and it is not going to help or hurt?

Anyone know anything about this?

The short answer is no.

The long answer depends on your specialty, the programs you are applying to and how good/bad your Step 1 score is. Although, if you already interviewed, your Steps are probably irrelevant as they're generally used as a cutoff for interviews, not a ranking tool. This is more likely to be the case in IM/Peds/Etc than it is in Neurosurgery or Plastics. Check w/ your top 3-5 programs to see if they require Step 2 to rank. If not, don't worry about it.
