The benefits of doing research?

I am in pharmacy school and I am thinking about doing research with a pharmaceutical sciences professor in the next school year. First of all, I enjoy doing research. This professor is a dual pharmD/phD and it'll be the first time I will do research with him. I just began wondering if it might even positively affect my application when/if I decide to apply for a residency or fellowship.

What are the odds? I have not had a publication yet, I hope it happens in the future but..

Residency: a lot of my friends mentioned that their clinical research gave them a huge edge and that it was a big talking point during their interviews

I think this professor does lab work by somehow combining his two degree information. I am going to be talking to him next week.
