Typical med student availability?

I am working on a project for an NGO that recruits volunteers (typically medical students) that want to do service abroad for several weeks or months. I am trying to find the typical availabilities for med students (for example, I've heard that in the US they get the summer of first year off).

Would my best bet be to look at calendars from different schools, or is there some other kind of resource available? Also, I am not only looking at schools in the US, but schools from other countries as well.
