i know that if the qv vector and the B vector are perpendicular, there is a centripetal force and thus qvb = mvsquared/r
is this also true if there is a COMPONENT of velocity (ie: x or y vector) perpendicular to the magnetic field, or is this only true if the motion is entirely perpendicular to the field?

the way you wrote it, only if motion is entirely perpendicular, i believe.

since F = qv x B, if you want to make it true for any motion, the equation would be
qvBsintheta = mvsqrd/r

only the component perpendicular has an effect.
