US residencies for foreign grads now vs before

In terms of difficulty when it comes to obtaining US residency now for foreign grads vs what it was like for them during early 1990's and mid 1980's. Obtaining specific specialty residencies like ortho, family, Anes, and etc now vs then? I'm sure usmle probably changed from then to now as well.

There are way more US trained graduates these days. There's no need to turn to foreign graduates.

Back in the day there was a far greater excess of residencies when compared with US graduates. This has narrowed substantially, particularly in the last 20 years.

I wonder how much of that is due to DO schools spreading like flies and doubling class sizes like there is no tomorrow?

Partly. But US MD schools have done the same.
