Hi all,

I am curious as to whether you know of a vacancy in Dermatology that was available and filled without it ever being posted on FindAResident. If so, can you let me know which program? Thanks!

Yeah, good luck with that....open positions are generally kept within the "circle of trust" (PDs, chairs) and are sent out to those applicants deemed worthy enough to apply.

"Don'tbeagunner" is correct. It's rare for any open positions to be advertised to the general public (although, it does occassionally happen).

Open residency slots in derm are rare indeed. But when it happens, in general, a residency program with an open residency slot will have a number of potential candidates in mind...usually people they have worked with in the past and/or interviewed well at the program (that is of course, if they are still available and did not get accepted by another Derm residency program already). They will also inform other Derm chairmen and program directors that an opening is available. The program will ask other Derm chairmen and program director for recommendations on other potential good candidates to fill the position. Then when a list of candidates is compiled, they may do a formal interview process for the open slot.

BOTTOM LINE: It helps to have connections in the field in Derm. It's all about "networking".

I had a similar question over on another board. They were very helpful and gave me this:

Go over to the right, and they have all the information for the last six years.

Click on derm for 2004 and you'll get the 2005 unmatched list. Same thing for 2002, 2001, and 2000. That site has the unmatech list for 2006 and 2005, only.

Yes its true there are a few Derm spots that go unfilled or suddenly open up most years for various reasons. As stated above they are virtually all filled by those with connections.Either top level applicants who didnt match and get their dept chairman to go to bat for them or research fellows and others who have been waiting patiently for a spot to open. Most programs can easily fill the occasional open spot this way.
