Hey everyone,

I'm a first time applicant and writing to know whether I have a shot for when I submit my application this Thursday. I know my GPA does not do me any favors, however this was the result of having cancer my freshman year and dealing with the after effects through sophomore year. Though thankfully I was able to pull a strong upward trend for my final years and pull my GPA up somewhat. Would appreciate any advice and input.

Here is what I have so far:
  • 3.1 GPA
  • 515 MCAT (128/129/129/129)
  • Asian but mixed race NJ resident with interest in pursuing rural medicine
  • Deans list for both junior and senior year
  • LOR from two science professors and chief of volunteer staff from local hospital
  • Personal statement focusing on my experiences will illness and helping patients during my time volunteering and working
Clinical Experience
  • 170 hours as a transport volunteer
  • 1300 hours as a patient transporter
Non-Clinical Activities
  • 1200 hours as an office assistant
  • 950 hours as a lab tech
  • 200 hours animal rehabilitation
  • mushroom farming as a hobby

You have many state public schools on your list that admit very few non residents with your GPA and no connection to the state.
The GPA-MCAT grid shows you have only a 1/3 chance for a MD acceptance so you should apply to DO schools also.
I suggest these MD schools:
Rutgers
Robert Wood Johnson
Hackensack Meridian
Cooper Rowan
Drexel
Temple
Jefferson
Penn State
Geisinger
New York Medical College
Albany
Vermont
Quinnipiac
Western Michigan
Oakland Beaumont
Medical College Wisconsin
Rosalind Franklin
Creighton
TCU
NOVA MD
Wake Forest
For DO schools I suggest these:
Rowan
PCOM (all schools)
WVSOM
NYITCOM
Touro-NY
LECOM (all schools)
MU-COM
DMU-COM
KCU-COM
ATSU-KCOM
AZCOM
TUNCOM
UIWSOM
ACOM

Got it. I'll definitely make changes to the school list. Thanks for the advice.

What specific activities on your list (with details please) support your strong interest in rural health?
None of them really. I doubt a paragraph in my personal statement about wanting to pursue health in undeserved areas to provide more options to patients is enough to make up for that big shortfall.
