In undergrad, I wore work-out clothes. It was comfortable, appropriate for labs, and that's what the other students were wearing.

So what do you wear on a regular day to class?

I was planning on treating class like any job I'd show up to, no jeans, no sandals, etc. but I'm wondering if on the off occasion I could get away with some athleisure.

I'd shoot for "elevated casual" at orientation to gauge the situation. Nicer jeans and sandals are probably fine, but unless you actually have a job in an office, there's no need to make yourself dress like anything but a well put together graduate student. Dress more professionally (business casual) if you're meeting 1:1 with any authority figures. If it's like my experience, people will devolve into regular-casual by midterms and athleisure by finals. Night classes and lecture classes tend to be more casual than daytime classes and seminars.
