of course, the "do I have a chance?" threads!
But I just posted a thread along these lines yesterday. I really think it's great that people can get advice and reassurance on this board, even if the threads are a "tired topic"!!

I know there are annoying but please help! I have a 3.93 SGPA and a 3.99 OGPA and an MCAT of 38. I've led democratic revolts in Guatemala and Belize. I want to take the August MCAT so hopefully I'll do better. So please, realistically, what are my chances of making it into an Allo school? Do you think I should go DO or Carrib? Please help me I don't know what to do. Also, which schools should I apply to? I can't make any of my own decisions or do my own research so PLEASE someone else do it for me!

Are you a URM? If not, then you don't stand a chance at getting into medical school. Maybe try PA school or get a master's degree. I guess maybe if you do a post-bacc program for 10 years and get your GPA up, you might stand a chance. Definitely take the MCAT again, but wait until next April. Taking it in August is a guarranteed rejection. Best of luck!

Give us old foagies our fun! :D

You need to add the "Should I choose Med school X or Med school Y". I hate those!

lol, I think it's great...definitely worth making fun of. I just wanted to point out that while I may very well participate in the fun, it's still great that people can post these threads :)

My vote is for all the AMCAS threads: when can we submit? Can I list X course as BCPM? How long is the PS? What if I went to two different schools?

These are all good questions, but they are all answered in the AMCAS instructions (because, guess what, everyone has these questions) and I think it's pretty obnoxious to post without making the slightest attempt to find the answer yourself.

I hate anything that starts out as a simple question and quickly dissolves into a lecture about Jesus, creationism, morality, the perils of homosexulaity/premarital sex, and how most of us are going to hell.

You know you're going to hell for posting that, right?

I chose other.
I think the most tired ones are the ones about deciding whether or not to take a W. As in, "I am failing Orgo, should I get an F or withdraw??". Or, "I have 2 Ws on my transcript, is my life over?" The answer is just so obvious! In what alternate universe is a D or an F better than NO GRADE and an insignificant little W that can be explained away by "an illness in the family" or other such easily fabricated nonsense ???!!!

I actually wanted to list this as an option, but couldn't figure out how to word it! I completely agree with you though. Those threads kill me!

I also forgot "I'm a [insert non-medical field related] major. Can I still get into medical school?"

Please please please everyone I really need your help! I can't decide which school to go to. I really liked Harvard and UCSF, but I got full scholarships at Penn and Hopkins so that makes my decision difficult. Plus, WashU liked me so much that they gave me a full scholarship plus a car a and a new house. But I'm not really sure if I will get a good education at WashU....does anyone know about their curriculum? And what about Duke?!? I loved that school but I'm waitlisted. What do you think??? i'm so nervous about this whole decision....i mean, what if i pick the wrong school?!? then i will never get a residency in emergency pediatric psychoneuroendocrinology! and without that, i won't know what to do with the rest of my life...

You obviously need to wait until next year and apply to Stanford and Yale.

"emergency pediatric psychoneuroendocrinology" that just killed me!

Apparently, this one question: "what's a gunner?" Sheeeeez ;)

Ya, there definately should have been an option for the school vs. school threads. "HELP! Harvard vs. Hopkins??"

Or one of my favorites: the brag thread disguised as "Do I Have a Chance?" They always go like, "Ok I have a 3.9 GPA, but I am ready to kill myself because I got a W freshman year in creative writing. Also I only got a 37 on my mcat.. damn that 11 on verbal! and my E/Cs kinda suck, I only spent 4 summers with Doctors Without Borders where I did some neurosurgery on indignant, HIV-positive tsunami victims, and my only rec right now is the Pope's last letter he wrote before he died. Do I have a shot or should I throw myself off the roof right now??? HELP!"

I'm personally most annoyed by:
1. high school skids freaking out about which college to choose to best prepare them for med school.
2. people asking for homework help. Get a tutor.

there's nothing wrong with high school students asking what school they should use to best prepare them for med. school. They're taking the steps now so as to save thousands of dollars for their car insurance.

That's exactly the thing: it doesn't matter.

My favorite.....Am I an URM?

If you don't know...HOW in the heck should I?

So you didn't get a letter from Mother Theresa before she died? Yeah. Throw yourself off the roof now.

From dictionary.com:
in·dig·nant ( P ) Pronunciation Key (n-dgnnt)
adj.
Characterized by or filled with indignation. See Synonyms at angry.

:D

I chose "other" because I wanted to mention the money threads. I'm someone who believes doctors deserve to be well compensated, but even I get sick of all the "how much do doctors in field X make" posts, or worse, the "d00dZ, what field should I go into to make the most $$$???!!!11!!" posts, as well as the socialists who then feel compelled to chime in with "if you don't want to practice primary care and make $20k a year for it, you don't deserve to be a doctor!"

i personally cant stand the should i go to x versus y school. if you don't know which you like better, how should i? and why would you listen to some advice over the internet? but the do i stand a chance thread runs a very very close second. almost neck and neck.
