If you are asking a professor for one hopefully they have written a Letter of Recommendation before. In the email to the professor, employer, or podiatrist (or even in person could do just as well) mention that you are applying to podiatric medical school and was wondering if they could write you a letter of recommendation. Like @kjburke said, you should use Interfolio.com and get all the necessary accounts for them to send it to.
If you are talking to a good professor then they have written an LOR in the recent past for a student and if they did they probably used Interfolio.
