Why do some people consider nursing as a downgrade from Chemistry or Pharmacy?

I'll get my Chem degree this year and when I told some people that I was looking into applying for nursing, they ask why and state it would be like "downgrading". Why they would say this? Does anyone else agree? If so, why?

Nurses just don't get the respect they deserve. I would not consider it a downgrade.
