i'm just wondering if dental students actually work part-time for some pocket $$. it seems like the schedule is so packed everyday and there's no way to spare any time for work. but tuition is so damn expensive so it definitely helps to get some extra cash. any thoughts?

I've heard of some people working part-time waiting jobs a few evenings a week. But you pretty much better get used to taking out loans. It's the reality of med/dental school.

Maybe it's different from school to school but I was told that you are contractually obligated to not work while attending.

I doubt that is true. I think a few upper classmen work, but it isn't worth it unless you can pull in some serious cash for your time. It is probably better to spend that time learning your crown prep to do it fast and nice so you can charge your grand when you graduate. 10$ an hr at some lame job is just that, lame! Maybe if you are a hygienist then that could be a smart thing on saturdays maybe

I'm keeping my Friday night bartending shift in Walnut Creek while I go to UCSF. I just can't give that up. It's only a 4 hour shift one day a week (10PM to 2AM) and I will pullin an extra $1,500/month. How do you say no to that??

That would calculate to over 90$ an hour, per hour that is more money than you will make after you graduate for some years. Sounds good if that is true, I would keep it too.
The average dentist per hour take home does not make 90$ an hour!

Escorting pays a minimum of $250/hour.

UNLV might be a good option then!

Old thread out there with this topic.

Many of my classmates work to make some extra $$...everything from working for various dental school departments to parking lot attendants to online poker (if you consider that working :)). You can always find something...just depends on what you wish to spend your little bit of free time doing.

When I escort I make 250/hr, but I make other agreements with my clients that pay much much more...wiiiiiiink wiiiiink. :barf:

damn...i wish i could bartend!!! :D but honestly i think $10/hr isnt that lame. hopefully i can find something when i go to dental school. i'm considering a light job like working in the library.

Second that =)
After exams all of us should just kick it at his workplace and then resume back to studying.

donate plasma! about $200 extra a month

it probably depends on your time management skills and how much time you have to spend studying/practicing in the lab... me, I don't even have time to do my own dishes, let alone hold a job...

I don't think that I'll work at all during the first two years. Hopefully by third and fourth year I'll be able to coach some kids in group and private lessons as I do now (figure skating).

If it's in Vegas, it might be worth it
There are strippers, bartenders and valets in my classes, and they pull in serious cash.
